Three ways to spend a day in Antwerp from the Mandarin Oriental Conservatorium, built from what 184 distinct Redditors recommended across 47 archived threads, with every venue’s hours checked against its own website on 10 September 2026.
Redditors agree the centre is small and walkable (“you can see a lot in six hours”, “everything is within 45 minutes’ walking”) but that two or three hours is “very little time”, and that four nights is too many. A full day covers the four things they name most, the MAS rooftop, the KMSKA, the old-town walk and the station, plus the river tunnel and a proper beer. Half a day gets you the centre only; the long day adds two museums and jazz.
Times assume a weekday and the Eurocity Direct from Amsterdam Zuid. Badges show how many distinct Redditors recommended each stop.
The centre-only loop: station, Meir, cathedral, Grote Markt, Steen, fries, and the free MAS rooftop. Enough to say you have seen Antwerp; not enough for a museum.
Walk 4 min to the Museumplein tram stop on Van Baerlestraat.
10 min, every 6–10 min. Or a taxi from the rank on Museumplein, about 8 min.
1 h 22, no seat reservation: sit anywhere in your class. Arrives 10:26.
Come up from the platforms into the 1905 hall and look back down the four levels. Leave by the front, Astridplein side, not the rear exit.
Antwerp Central is much nicer than Amsterdam Central.
Walk west. Look above the shopfronts: the upper floors are the show. Detour through the Twaalfmaandenstraat passage to glance at the 1531 Handelsbeurs (inside only at weekends).
Walk De Keyserlei and the Meir towards Groenplaats and the Grote Markt; that area is the most picturesque.
Four Rubens altarpieces under the tallest Gothic spire in the Low Countries. €12, no booking; Nello and Patrasche sleep outside the door.
We locals often forget that it is a majestic, historic place.
Slip into the 16th-century alley at Oude Koornmarkt 16, come out by the Brabo fountain and guild houses, then walk to the river and up onto the free Steen terrace.
Grote Markt, then a few steps towards the Scheldt and you find Het Steen.
A puntzak of fries with stoofvlees sauce at Frituur ’t Stad (Melkmarkt 1), then one Bolleke at Paters Vaetje beside the cathedral. Skip the terraces on the Grote Markt and Groenplaats.
The only real frituur in the old centre; ignore everything else around there.
20 min via Veemarkt and the Sint-Paulus church (interior opens 14:00) to the red sandstone tower of the MAS.
Escalate up the free boulevard to the roof: the port, the cathedral and Linkeroever in one sweep. The museum floors are optional (€12).
Go to the top for free and have a great view of the harbour.
Walk back through the centre (20 min) to Lijnwaadmarkt 11 for the one chocolate café locals defend on the cathedral square.

25 min along the Meir. Or swap Quetzal for the Sint-Annatunnel and take the premetro from Groenplaats.
Arrives 16:56. Trains leave Antwerp at :35 every hour until 22:35.

Any day but Monday (MAS roof closed). Saturday the cathedral shuts at 15:00, so move it first.

Walk 4 min to the Museumplein stop on Van Baerlestraat.
10 min. Buy the train ticket in advance; the station has no international desk.
Arrives 09:26. Free seating; the upper deck on the right has the Rotterdam skyline.
Fifteen minutes in the hall and on the mezzanine; the dome is best from the top level looking down.
Even as a native it still brightens my day every time I pass through the station.
Down De Keyserlei and the Meir (25 min), then a flat white at Ray’s on Handschoenmarkt 13, the one non-trap on that square.
Not the typical tourist trap: phenomenal coffee steps from the cathedral.
Opens 10:00. Rubens’ Raising and Descent from the Cross, the Assumption over the altar. Allow 50 min.

Alley, guild houses, Brabo, then the river: the Steen terrace is free and the visitor centre has the loos.
The most tourist yet local route to walk and visit.
From Sint-Jansvliet ride the 1933 wooden escalators down, walk 572 m under the Scheldt, and turn round on the far bank for the skyline. Back through the tunnel or on the free Sint-Anna ferry to Steenplein.
Take the wooden escalators, cross under, have fries from the shed and a magnificent view of the city.
Fish A’gogo (Handschoenmarkt 1, small plates, closed Wed) or a puntzak at Frituur ’t Stad, then a Bolleke at Paters Vaetje.
The bartender suggested I head over to Paters Vaetje and I had a blast drinking with the locals.
20 min via the Veemarkt; the Sint-Pauluskerk (Rubens, Van Dyck, Calvary garden, €5) opens at 14:00 if you want it on the way.
Free up the boulevard to the roof. If you buy a ticket (€12), the port floor and the Antwerp floor are the two worth 30 min.
You can go to the top for free and have a great view of the harbour.
Walk the Scheldekaaien south past the Steen, cut in at Sint-Jansvliet and browse the brocante shops of the Kloosterstraat (35 min). A Velo bike (€5 day pass) does it in 12.

Het Zuid is a very nice neighbourhood: arts, culture, a big new park.
Eleven changing taps and stoofvlees in a brown bar on the Kammenstraat. Closed Tuesdays; De Muze on the Melkmarkt is the swap.
One of those tiny gems where the beer list is defined by quality, not quantity.
20 min via Groenplaats and the Meir. Premetro trams from Groenplaats currently terminate at Opera, so walking is simpler.
Arrives 19:56. If you linger, the 19:35, 20:35, 21:35 and 22:35 all run.
Back at the hotel about 20:20.
Tuesday to Friday is ideal. Monday closes the MAS roof, Red Star Line and Middelheim; Saturday the cathedral shuts at 15:00; Thursday one tunnel escalator is under maintenance but the lifts run.
For people who like to fill a day: breakfast in the old town, the full Classic loop, two more museums, a sit-down Flemish dinner and live jazz before the penultimate train.
First tram 5 runs well before this; a taxi to Station Zuid is about 8 min if you would rather not walk in the dark.
Arrives 08:26. The 06:04 exists too, but nothing in town opens before 09:30.
The hall is empty and lovely at this hour. Walk the Meir before the shops open (25 min).
I spent a couple of hours just people watching at the train station.

It is really worth doing this with a guide; the free guided tours are on the spot.
Escalators, 572 m under the river, the skyline, and the free ferry back to Steenplein.
Cross the river through the pedestrian tunnel; my favourite view is from the left bank.

Roof first, then the port and Antwerp floors with a €12 ticket (75 min).
Very impressive, and you can go to the top for free.
Five minutes further north: the emigrant sheds where two million people sailed for America. 60 min, €10. Beer fans swap this for the De Koninck brewery tour (tram 7/15 south, €19.90, closes 17:30).
Beautiful museum to spend a couple of hours in.
12 min by bike along the Scheldekaaien, 35 min on foot with the Kloosterstraat shops on the way.
Velo bikes are everywhere for 5 euro a day.
Book the 16:00 slot; 90 min. On Thursdays the museum runs to 22:00 and you can push this later.
KMSKA is a world class museum.
Tim Van Laere and its neighbours are free when open; otherwise a bench in the park.

Since December 2024 the NS/NMBS Eurocity Direct runs Lelystad – Almere – Amsterdam Zuid – Schiphol – Rotterdam – Breda – Antwerpen-Centraal – Brussels. From the Museum Quarter, Zuid is a 10-minute tram ride; Centraal is 15 minutes the other way and only needed for Eurostar.
